5 Minute Honey Mustard Sauce

Why You’ll Love This Honey Mustard Sauce

Lindsay Ostrom headshot.

Honey mustard sauce means a lot of different things to me, but mostly what it means is that when I make it, I am going to get to eat something that will be dipped in sauce. And in my life, there are few things better than a meal dipped in sauce.

Let’s take, for example, chicken. I’ve mentioned before that my true feelings for chicken are less than wonderful, but you guys. Some kind of magic shnazzery happens when I take chicken (ahem, the variety that’s been breaded and fried into chicken nuggets – just leave me alone) and dip it into this pool of honey-gold. It’s the kind of sauce that could smash your chicken-hater ways and turn you into more of a lover.

I mean, a lover of all things dipped in the sauce.

So, yeah, this is a conditional kind of love.

Ingredients You’ll Need

The list is short, friends. Just the way we like it! Besides honey, you’ll also need…

  • Mayo
  • Dijon mustard
  • White vinegar
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper

How To Make Honey Mustard Sauce

I’ll just give you the gist of this recipe: IT ONLY TAKES FIVE MINUTES TO MAKE.

Step 1: Whisk your ingredients up in a small bowl – or a jar works.

Step 2: Enjoy! Perfectly zippy, tangy, and sweet.

How To Use Honey Mustard

Do imagine yourself whipping up this dreamy sauce in about three minutes and sitting down to a plateful of something – roasted veggies (sweet potatoes plus this sauce are so good), chicken tenders, french fries, sandwiches, wraps, baked tofu, use it as a meat marinade (pork or chicken are great choices!), or as a salad dressing on a green-y salad – coated in the most perfect consistency and sweet flavor of homemade honey mustard sauce.

Honey Mustard Sauce: Frequently Asked Questions

I’m all out of white distilled vinegar. What can I sub?

White wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar work as well.

How long does this last in the fridge?

Store leftovers of this sauce in a sealed container for up 5 days in the fridge.

Could I use this as a glaze?

Yep! This would be great on top of salmon or chicken.

Can I use yellow mustard?

Dijon mustard is really what you’ll need here to get the right flavor. I would not recommend yellow mustard.

Can I use whole-grain/stone ground mustard?

You definitely could, but it would change the texture. Dijon keeps the sauce smooth, but with whole-grain, you’ll have the seeds in there as well. Still delicious, just a different texture!

Does honey mustard sauce have dairy in it?

No dairy here!

Storage and Prep-Ahead

So you’re looking to make this sauce in advance and store it? Love the way you think!

This honey mustard sauce will keep well in the fridge in a clean, sealed airtight container for up to 5 days. When you’re ready to use the sauce, just give it a quick stir or whisk to liven it up again.

On the honey mustard dressing you say 5 serving – what is a serving per person for this recipe please- Thank you

I would really like to have the measurements of recipes in something other than cups. What is a cup? What is a cup of honey? Mayo? Mustard? In the UK we don’t use cups in our recipes, we use measurements such as ml, oz, g etc. Please give an alternative. Thanks.

It tell what the ingredients are but don’t give the measurements, I’m a man , I need the measurements. Lol

The mix ratio i like better in your recipe than the others on the net. I make my own mustard, mayo, and a ghost pepper hot honey mustard so it’s basically just an equal ratio of each ingredient for me. Most barely use any mustard at all and i think this ratio will dial up the mustard part compared to most recipes I’ve tried. Here’s an extra 5 star to bump you up in the algorithm

This is a terrible recipe. It’s supposed to be a honey mustard sauce but you might as well just use straight mustard. Cut the mustard to 2 tablespoons and increase the honey and mayo.

This is an excellent sauce which comes together very quickly with ingredients that nearly everyone will have in the pantry. My batch came out a little bit too vinegar-y, but a touch more honey brought it back into a nice balance. Pairs well with meats and vegetables.

Hi Lindsay! I just made your sauce, tasted it, and boy, I cannot wait to use this on my chicken tonight! Q: have you/can you freeze this? I usually freeze my “specials” in ice cube trays, then pop them once they’re frozen into zip lock bags. I just know this is gonna be a keeper!

My wife and I have made this sauce MANY times with great results! We love using it on our homemade chicken sandwiches. We also tried substituting the honey with dill pickle relish for a different (and also amazing) flavor. Thanks for the recipe!

I just made this to go along with homemade chicken tenders. It was beyond amazing! My family loved it so much they put it on everything, not just the chicken. New favorite sauce recipe!

Served this last night and it was a hit! It made a great dip over Trader Joe’s chicken taquitos. Loved that it was so quick and easy.

Just for the record….You claimed No Dairy In this Version. Mayo is made from eggs yoke’s which the last time I checked was in fact Dairy.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Although it’s a common misconception, eggs aren’t dairy so if you’re dairy free this recipe is for you!

  12. Pinch of Yum Logo

I had to use regular yellow mustard because I didn’t have any Dijon on hand. It still turned out very good.

  13. Pinch of Yum Logo

Delicious. This could be the best tasting honey mustard I’ve ever had. My only criticism is it could be of a thicker consistency. The taste is the best though.

Tried this and loved it! On my second attempt, I added twice the amount of cayenne pepper and a pinch of extra black pepper with a few drops of white vinegar and it went extremely well with my chicken fingers! Many thanks Geometry Dash Lite action game.
